Obituary of Alfred W. Marks

Dr. Alfred W. Marks, 86, Former President of the Nassau County Medical Society Alfred W. Marks, M.D., a past President of the Nassau County Medical Society and who served for 30 years as the director of internal medicine and the director of medical education at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, died on Oct. 21 at his home at the Atria Tanglewood in Lynbrook. Dr. Marks was a board certified internist who grew up in Rockaway Beach. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN and the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. Upon graduation from medical school, he completed his residency at Meadowbrook Hospital in East Meadow before moving to Mercy Medical Center in 1963. In addition to his duties at Mercy, he had an active private practice in internal medicine, first in Merrick and then in Rockville Centre. He was a strong leader for medicine in every sense of the word. Known as "a doctor's doctor" for his exemplary diagnostic and clinical skills, he was also a compassionate, caring and dedicated physician who was beloved by his patients. In 1981, he was awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Service for his devotion to public service. In 1993, the Marks Lecture Center was dedicated in his honor at Mercy Medical Center. He retired in 1994 to care for his beloved wife Anne. In recent years, he served on the Medical Ethics Committee at Mercy Medical Center and as an Ombudsman at the Grandell Nursing Home in Long Beach. His passion for medicine was only surpassed by his love for family, friends and his deep religious faith. He was an ardent fan of Notre Dame football and the NY Yankees. He also loved spending time with family and friends at the beach and water at Point Lookout, Captiva, FL, and Mohican Lake, NY. Family and friends may visit at N.F. Walker Funeral Home, Merrick, from 2:00-4:00 p.m.and 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24. A Funeral Mass will be offered Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 11:00 a.m. in Cure of Ars Church, in Merrick. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity of New York, Development Office, 6301 Riverdale Ave., Bronx, NY 10471-1093. He is survived by his children Rosemary Durant (Steve), Helen Marks Cohen (Isaac), Alfred (Jeanne), Elizabeth Ring (Timothy) and James; his 13 grandchildren Meredith, Kaitlyn, Daniel, Lauren, Caroline, Clare, Hannah, Kevin, Kayleen, AnneMarie, Patrick, Christina and Theresa; and his brother Roger. He was preceded in death by his wife Anne, parents George and Helen, brothers George and James, sisters Sr. Helen Mary Marks, SC, and Martina McCartney, grand daughter Hope, and Tyler.
