Obituary of Robert M Phelps

Phelps , Robert M. (Bob), age 89, of Merrick, NY, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2016 at North Shore University Hospital. Funeral services will be held at Cure of Ars Church, 2323 Merrick Ave., Merrick, on Friday, December 30 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Rood Cemetery, 111 Old Country Rd., Westbury. Visitation will be held at N. F. Walker Funeral Home, 2039 Merrick Ave., Merrick, on Thursday, Dec 29 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Bob was born on December 23, 1927 in Warsaw, NY to the late Floyd and Mary Phelps. He is a graduate of Mepham High School in Bellmore and East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania. Bob retired in 1990 from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District after 38 years. He had a long and distinguished career as a teacher, coach, school and community leader and contributor. His character was admired by all of his colleagues, and he was a role model to many students by providing a great example of good character and sportsmanship. Bob married the late Pauline Goddess in 1952. He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Carla Jassey Phelps, his four children: Bob (and wife, Kathy) of Cary, NC, Patti (and husband, John) of Roswell, GA, Tom (and wife, Jeannine and her children Taylor, Jarrett, Matthew and Brianna) of Waxhaw, NC, and Jack (and wife, Colleen) of Natick, MA, grandchildren: Jack (Jill) Kait, (Josh) Lauren, Tim, Christopher, Caroline and Michael, great grandchild, Evelyn, brother, Dick Phelps (and wife, June) of London, England, stepsons :Dr. Lewis Jassey (and wife, Orna), Adam (and wife, Jodi) and Dr. Jonathan (and wife, Suzanne) and their children Julia, Mya, Brett, Charli, Camryn, and Harper.
