Always remembered with great fondness.
His kindness and great character was a benefit
to me at Calhoun H.S.
Thank you to Coach, though he wasn’t my Coach.
He was my Drivers Ed teacher.
I still think of his guidance when I drive, and I’ll never forget the way he treated me with great respect and worked to solve a problem when I approached him for help about 45 years ago.
His family knows it already, but I had to add:
‘What a Great Man he Was’

To the Phelps family, I was the Calhoun Colts football team manager from 1974 to 1976 working closely with all the coaches. Coach Phelps had a profound effect on my life. He was the first man in my life to find my faults and pointed them out to me to help me to become a much better person. He was a key player in my becoming student of the month in my sophomore year. He saw what I had to offer and made the best of everything I could give. He introduced me to Tommy and Jackie. Two great sons and I'm glad I got to work with them. I would not be the success that I am today without Coaches guidance all those years. I am sorry I did not keep in touch after I graduated. Coach was a great man that had the great ability to read people. Coach Phelps took care of people that took care of him and his teams. One of the beloved team managers a few years prior to me, went on to be the manager of the NY Jets thanks to Coach Phelps.Coach talked to me about me possibly doing the same for the Giants. Many memories that I will always cherish. My prayers go out to the whole family. Gods speed.

I was a student of Coach Phelps at Calhoun High School from 1982-84. He was a good man who pushed us to exceed ourselves, and who supported us when we were a step behind. I'll never forget him taking notice of me when I performed well in the standardized fitness test in my senior year. It made me proud to know that I was on Coach Phelps' radar.
My sincere condolences to Bob's family and friends. I hope they know how many lives he positively affected.

Coach phelps, along with coach Bierman were our two football coaches at Calhoun high in 1958-1961. I believe we were undefeated in 1958. He was a sweet man and a memorable coach. God bless him, and I will miss him.

I have so many great memories of Coach Phelps and playing football for the Colts from 1969-1971. I send my condolences to his family and hope that all my teammates from those teams carried the same memories of Coach as I do. As I was the center on those teams, I so vividly remember what he wrote in my yearbook and it is 45+ years later. He wrote "Best of luck to Calhoun's version of John Schmitt". John was the starting center on the NY Jets and wore #52, which is the number I wore.
