It was 1965 when I joined the Merrick fire department hook and ladder company number 1 and met Oscar who became a dear friend of mine over the years and instantly we got to know each other and hang out together he was 18 years older than me but he had a young heart and mind we used to go out drinking and and raise hell looking for women we bowled for a couple years in a Tavern League in 1965 Oscar brought me over to a place called the new breed in Freeport a bar and we started playing softball the bat bar and we played softball for the Merrick Fire Department around 1973 we started playing ball for the spouter Inn in Freeport till about 1978 we still play for the Merrick Fire Department and PJs bar where Oscar was the pitcher Oscar just used to love to do the youthful things he was a great person a great friend and would do anything for anybody I remember him taking his four cylinder Honda motorcycle to work in the rain he purchased it from Jack diamondstein it was a rare bike one day I remember Oscar coming home from work and it was slightly snowing about 10 years ago he hurt his ankle I said how did you do that he said I felt with my stairs in the back of the house but I remembered how to full to the right from my paratroopa day so the full wasn't too hard funny man I remember him letting me to rebuild a motor in front of his house in my Bronco around 1985 he let me stick a 60 Lincoln in the driveway and I yanked the motor out of it he got a little involved with it with my father supervisors they were good friends I remember he told me the story how he became owner of his dog named dog he told me he was in a bar a man was with a little puppy abusing him and Oscar told me he took the dog from the man and the guy said that's my dog and Oscar said it was your dog he's mine now I remember going Upstate with Oscar and dog to a place call Bash Bish Falls man was that water cold guess who ain't in the water first that's right dog asking how I eventually went into the Stream I lived in Oscars garage apartment from around 1978 to 19 90. Oscar was like a second father to me at what I cherish very much was he always told me Peter you are like a third son to me that meant a lot love you and miss you Oscar

There were no tougher, braver men on the planet than the American paratroopers of WWII. I've had the great privilege and honor of meeting and getting know a few of them. Oscar Spruyt was one. RIP.
