Obituary of Ann O'Connell

Ann (Matera) O'Connell, 68, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 4, 2018 in Paris, France. Born in Brooklyn, NY, the daughter of the late Aniello "Nick" Matera & Carolyn (DeMarco) Matera, she is the wife of 42 years of William "Bill" O'Connell. Ann was a graduate of Bishop Kearney High School and Baruch College. She married Bill in 1975 and settled in Merrick in 1976 where they raised their two children. Ann worked for the Merrick Post Office for 25 years before turning to local real estate. Ann's love of family, passion for traveling and being near the ocean, and her affection towards her grandchildren will be remembered by all who knew her. In addition to her husband Bill, Ann is survived by her two children, Lauren O'Connell and her wife Joanna Posner of Framingham, MA and Bill O'Connell and his wife Alyson of Paris, France and her cherished grandchildren Emma and Caleb Posner-O'Connell and Charlotte, Bennett, and Camille O'Connell. She is also survived by her siblings and their families: Lucille and Artie McLaughlin of, John Matera and Jennie Matera; Ralph and Kathy Matera; Frances and Bill Meehan; as well as her sisters-in-law and their families: Patty and Chuck Berry and Barbara and Dennis Murphy, and her 15 nieces and nephews, and 18 great nieces and nephews. Ann was predeceased by her dear friend and first cousin Fran Gartner. Visiting hours will be Friday May 18, 2018 2-4PM and 7-9PM and Saturday, May 19 from 2-4 (memorial service at 3:30) at N. F. Walker Funeral Home 2039 Merrick Avenue, Merrick, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bellmore-Merrick EMS would be appreciated.
