Obituary of Lawrence E. Worters, Jr.
Captain Lawrence E. Worters, Jr. “Crossed the Bar” on Saturday March 17, 2018.
Devoted husband of Vera Worters.
Loving father of Loretta and Keith.
Cherished grandfather of Bryan, Kevin and Sofia and father- in- law of Marlene Pena Worters.
His siblings Gloria Morris and Richard preceded him in death.
He was born in Cambridge, MA, but spent all his youth in Wakefield, MA.
He is a proud Navy Veteran of World War II having served mostly in Armed Guard and in all theaters of operations.
He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and sailed for the Isbrandtsen SS Line until he married and “Swallowed the Anchor” (Retired from sea life.)
He taught at his alma mater for six years and was then the operation and training officer at the Maritime Administration (MARAD) Eastern Region.
He received the gold medal from the Chapel of the Four Chaplains, the highest and most prestigious award presented to a person whose leadership has brought his or her actions to worldwide attention and whose very life epitomizes the spirit of the sacrifice of the Four Chaplains.
With this honor Captain Worters joined the ranks of other past recipients including former United States Presidents Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter and Ronald Regan as well as Nelson Mandela and Margaret Thatcher.
Visitation at N.F. Walker, Inc. Funeral Home,2039 Merrick Ave., Merrick NY on Wednesday. March 21 from 2-4 and 7-9PM.
The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday March 22, 2018 at 10am.
Interment with Navy Honors following the service at Pinelawn Memorial Park and Cemetery, Farmingdale NY.
