Obituary of Charles Martin Siversen

Please share a memory of Charles to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Charles Siversen, known to family and friends as Chuck, was born in Brooklyn to Sarah Barrett and Christopher Siversen. The last and youngest of five siblings, he learned early to engage what he called the 11th Commandment: “calm down.” His Red Hook childhood brimmed with adventure, and he cultivated a deep connection to the water early on.

A true "Jack of all trades," Charles dedicated 45 years to Asbestolith. However, his talents extended far beyond his profession. From home renovations –extensions on the house, electrical work, plumbing, tiling – to sailing the open water, Charles mastered many skills. In 1963, he met and married Mary Lou, together raising two cherished children: Christine and Christopher. His talents weren’t limited to construction; his culinary skills were so impressive that those who knew him would quip that his pasta sauce rivaled his Italian wife’s own!

Christine and Christopher recall their dad as a pillar of strength; a quiet giant who filled a room with warmth. A constant presence in their lives, he embodied the role of a devoted and kind grandfather to Sarah, Nicholas, Devyn, and Ryan. Throughout his grandchildren’s elementary years, Charles readily took on afternoon childcare, ensuring their needs were met. His dedication to their well-being was unwavering and unmatched.

Family and construction brought him solace, but the water held his heart. He found peace in the rocking cradle of his boat, surrendering to the rhythm of waves on weekends at Fire Island. This was his time to decompress and he took great pleasure in sailing. This devotion led him to serve as commodore of the Long Island Yacht Club for years.

Our commodore navigated his final journey with a calm demeanor, generous spirit, and a touch of wry humor that kept hospital and rehab staff on their toes. Though sometimes disoriented, he'd invariably find a witty remark to make them laugh. That was his spirit: He always wanted to bring cheer and comfort to everyone around him. He was a smooth sailor to the very end.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Lou; children, Christine and Christopher; grandchildren, Sarah, Nicholas, Devyn, Ryan and Silje; and many loving relatives and friends.

With Charles' passing, a chapter closes in our family's history, but his life story opens a cherished memory book in our hearts. Sail on, dear Charles/Chuck/Dad/Grandpa. Your journey is complete, your dreams are fulfilled, and you will remain forever loved. May his life inspire us all to conquer the rough seas with a calm, courageous spirit.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to St. Jude in honor of Charles.
