Lou started fishing at age 12, after his father purchased his first bamboo rod. And he never stopped. Later as a good looking teen, in place of dating girls Lou would run out to fish. At an early age he then started to learn how to earn a buck from fishing, then a hobby, while his main job was as a commercial welder. Meeting Rose, his love, later his wife, while she was in school and he worked near her school. Then as a good American, Lou joined the Marines, first as a welder and later a rifle range instructor, both overseas and here in the States (always fishing on the side). At this point Lou was married to Rose , started a family , son Lou jr and daughter Eva. Having injured his eyes while welding, Lou turned full time to his fishing hobby to earn a living. Working in fishing tackle stores, small then big, moving up until becoming an executive, all the while enjoying his hobby of fishing to the fullest. As the industry and world changed, Lou looked at different ways to be involved in the fishing tackle industry. These at times involved working with family and friends, stores and otherwise. But the basic theme was Lou loved to teach the technique and skills needed not only to fish, but actually catch fish. Over the years, generations of fishing families have fished with and were schooled by Lou. Later in life he became a commercial boat captain, something he was very proud of and again found a different way to earn a living from fishing. In the last few years before his illness became too much, he started to share his love of making custom fishing rods and fishing rigs. Many lucky people would receive a ”Lou” custom made rod or receive a bag full of custom hand tied rigs. Lou’s knowledge of how to make the rods or rigs the right way made them incredibly successful. It’s like Lou had been a fish in a prior life. Many people who fished with Lou not only that night ate fresh fish, but learned how to fish and feed themselves. While he possessed great fishing wisdom, Lou was a stubborn and hot-tempered person, but his intentions were to catch more fish and make you a better fisher-person. Everyone didn’t mind the aggression, due to the positive results his ideas achieved. It was joked that the fish population of LI will increase with the loss of Lou. But his friends and family will miss him dearly and the fishing community lost a true member.
