Obituary of Henry Jager Hinrichs
On Tuesday, 18th of June 2019, Henry "Sonny" Hinrichs, a very loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away at the age of 81.
Sonny was born on the 14th of December 1937 to Minnie "Jager" and Henry W. Hinrichs. He was born and raised in Merrick and remained in the town he loved for his whole life. Sonny attended both Camp Ave. Elementary and Mepham High School. His family roots are deep in Long Island. The Jager side of his family began farming on Long Island prior to the Civil War.
An Ex-Chief and 50 plus member of the North Merrick Fire Department, he dedicated his life to service of others. The friends he made in the department meant a great deal to him.
Sonny married the love of his life, Midge, on 19th of March 1960. They met in 1955 and were inseparable from that point forward.
Sonny retired from Grumman Aerospace after 35 years as a supervisor in their food service division. In his spare time he loved wood working and gardening. Making wood keepsakes for family and friends and tinkering around the house was what he enjoyed. Sonny loved his grandkids. His legacy truly lives through each one of them. The family were all together recently for his great granddaughter's baptism. It was a special time to have his whole family together.
His blessings in life include his loving wife, Midge, son Michael, daughter Dawn Mathisen. Also survived by daughter-in-law Eileen, son-in-law Bill Mathisen, grandchildren Matthew and Andrew Hinrichs, Christopher Mathisen, and Ashley Wichman, along with her husband Ryan, and great granddaughter Amelia Rose Wichman.
Sonny was loved by many including close family, John Caputo, and nieces Donna Moore (and family) Lori Raimo (and family). He will be truly missed and forever in our hearts.
If you would like to make a donation in his memory, St. Jude's Children Hospital means a lot to our family.
